A highly contagious neurological virus affecting horses was found in a Rockingham County stable this week.
The horse was taken to the College of Veterinary Medicine at N.C. State University after becoming ill with EHV-1, a neurologic form of equine herpesvirus, according to a news release from North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The horse was quarantined to the equine isolation unit of the hospital, the release stated.
According to Dr. James Talbot at Carolina Equine Hospital in Gibsonville, the horse was found in the central portion of Rockingham County. He said the incident was confined to a singular location.
