Sixteen horses, two donkeys seized from property

January 8, 2012

A group of 16 horses and two donkeys have been seized from a property in Vernon County, Missouri.

One of the horses was unable to stand and would receive emergency treatment, the Humane Society of Missouri said.

Seven dead horses were found on the property, near Milo.

The humane society's Animal Cruelty Task Force worked in co-operation with the Vernon County Sheriff's Office in the operation. A US Department of Agriculture/Missouri state deputy veterinarian also attended the scene.

The society said at least five of the horses appeared to be severely underweight. One horse was unable to stand and was taken to an equine veterinarian for emergency treatment.

Early in the week, the sheriff's office and humane society received calls from concerned citizens telling them of dead and starving horses on the property.
