Horse slaughter must end

While at least 70 percent of Americans are against horse slaughter, it is possible that tax money will be used for the resumption of USDA inspections of horse slaughter plants as a result of the Agriculture Appropriations bill signed into law in November. Taxpayers would be, in effect, subsidizing foreign-owned businesses that sell horse meat for human consumption.

Pro-slaughter groups say that it is a solution to neglect and abuse of unwanted horses, but Canada — with four slaughter plants — has the same increases in neglect as the U.S.

Slaughter plants do not want the starving, sick older horses. They want healthy horses with weight on them. Slaughter is no more the solution for unwanted horses than it would be for unwanted dogs or cats.
