With only 10 minutes’ warning to evacuate, Sherrie Baker, a Pleasant Valley Elementary teacher, says she quickly raced home and loaded up her three horses and a neighbor’s horse. Then she drove her truck and the horse trailer through flames blowing over U.S. 395 Thursday afternoon in the Washoe Drive Fire.

“I got back (home), and the barns were gone,” said Baker, who lives near the school. “But they saved the house.”
