Polish Arabians - March Breed

Polish Arabs: check out the page on the Arabian Horse Association website.

I decided to start with Polish Arabs since that is the breed my Crystal is! Polish Arabs have much more bone and size than most Egyptian Arabs. Crystal is nearly 16 hands and 1200lbs with isn't uncommon for this breed. The Polish breed the Arabs they imported from Egypt with the cold blooded horses of Europe and over time this is the exquisite horse they wound up with. They are breed to carry weight as much as they are bred for stamina. They are still raced in Poland, not to see how fast they are, but to see how much stamina they have while carrying more weight.

The have brains, they are sensible and gentle, and really want to please. I've owned and been around so many horses, and Polish Arabs never fail to impress me. They have brains AND beauty, the very best of both worlds.

I do not have lots of experience with the breed. I was a "dyed in the wool" Quarter Horse person, but I can now surely say, I am hooked on the Polish Arab breed. And it's not just because Crystal is "my" horse, I've read it, and heard it from other owners and breeders.

So if one comes to you and you're looking for a horse and you fear the high strung ways of the Egyptian Arab, give the Polish a try. I doubt you ever go back to anything else.

Friends Don't Eat Friends

The reason for this blog, Friends Don't Eat Friends. I was required to write an essay for my college English class, and I choose horse slaughter. I received an A on my essay, an A for the class and made the Dean's List. So I wanted to memorialize it by naming my blog the same title, and I often discuss the main issue. But there will be more things addressed but for more current events.....

On November 18, 2011 President Obama effectively made it legal to once again slaughter horses in the U.S. I, along with countless others, have been fighting horse slaughter even when it was banned here because it didn't stop people from taking them across our north and south borders to meet their end there in a horrendous way.

But now they can once again meet that horrible fate on American soil. This blog is my way of helping to educate people to this sad and rather unknown blight on America, the killing and eating of our horses.

Please feel free to leave a comment, in fact I encourage it. Share my blog with others. If you have a blog or website that does the same thing, please give it to me so I can list it. The more of us who are educated, the easier it will be to eradicate it. Any friend to the horses is a friend of mine, AND "Friends Don't Eat Friends".

Horses are my friends, and I don't eat my friends....

Horse slaughter has been a hot issue in this country for as long as I can remember. When I was a young teenager the debate became more nationally known, and politicians and businessmen, mostly cattlemen, were either on one side or the other. Forty years ago this past week the BLM was given the job to "protect" and "keep" the mustangs wild and safe. Well, if I had to give them a grade they'd get an F-.

The BLM is mostly just an extension of the Cattle Industry now. The Cattlemen have the BLM clear the public land of horses so they can run their cattle on public land for next to nothing, and the horses get rounded up and crammed in pens and who knows what happens after that.

I've always loved horses, and have had a horse of some kind since I was 8. That's 44 years and counting. I've been anti-slaughter ever since I heard it existed. I will continue to be anti slaughter until I die, or until it stops, whichever comes first. Hopefully I get to see it banned for good in my lifetime.

Horses aren't just any animal. We don't write books about cows, we don't make movies about special chickens. We don't write songs about pigs. Yet we do ALL these things about horses. Black Beauty is a CLASSIC. And it delves into horse abuse, from the horses point of view. In fact, it was horse abuse that initiated the creation of the Humane Society. Our nation was founded from the back of a horse. Yet there are greedy bastards that only want to make way for their cattle, they want to be able to over breed horses and then "cull" the rest. "Cull" meaning "send to slaughter so we don't have to feed them while we find them homes". At the very least that is irresponsible, at the very most it should be criminal.

I know there are tons of blogs out there already delving into this issue. But the more the merrier. If we make our voices heard, perhaps it will be easier to talk the "powers that be" to do the right thing and ban this terrible practice once and for all.

This will not be ALL about slaughter, I'll post other stories as well, abuse, breeding issues, and happy or funny stories just to lighten it up once in a while. I invite you to read, if you have recommendations, send them to me!!

But most of all, I hope you leave here a little more educated than you came.
